Village and Settlements Chiefs, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Village and Settlements Chiefs, 1909. This image is from Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photograph taken by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev, showcasing a group of Cossack leaders from the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. This image is part of the album "Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma" (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), which was created for the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition held in Omsk in 1911. The photograph depicts a gathering of village and settlement chiefs, all dressed in their traditional Cossack attire, seated around a table adorned with various items, including maps, documents, and weapons. The setting suggests a formal meeting or council, emphasizing the importance of community leadership and decision-making within the Cossack community. Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev captured this photograph during his journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk) in 1909. The photograph is part of a collection of over 500 photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The albums were intended to document the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the region. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing insight into the leadership structures and traditions of the Cossack community during the late Russian Empire. The image is a valuable historical record, offering a window into the lives of these communities and their role within the larger imperial context. Today, it is housed in the Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife, where it continues to inspire curiosity and fascination among scholars and visitors alike.
