EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century oil on wood painting, created by the skilled hand of Leon-Francois-Antoine Fleury, captures the breathtaking view of Place de la Concorde in the current 8th arrondissement of Paris, France, between 1804 and 1858. The iconic square, then known as Place de la Revolution, was undergoing significant transformation during this period, having been redesigned by Napoleon Bonaparte following the French Revolution. The painting showcases the grandeur of the location, with the Palais des Tuileries and its terrace extending along the left side of the image. The Tuileries Palace, a historic institution and popular tourist attraction, stands proudly in the background. The Place de la Concorde, a large public square, is filled with activity, as men and women engage in lively conversation, while others take leisurely strolls along the embankment. At the center of the square, the majestic Obelisk of Luxor, an ancient Egyptian monument, stands tall, surrounded by four statues representing the four continents. A colorful carnival-like atmosphere is evident, with people gathered around the Drinking Fountain of the Nations, located at the base of the obelisk. The painting's vibrant colors and intricate details bring the historic scene to life, transporting us back in time to experience a moment in Parisian history. This beautiful work of art, now part of the collection at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, is a testament to the rich heritage of the city and the artistic talent of Leon-Francois-Antoine Fleury.
