EDITORS COMMENTS
View of the Pasig River in Luzon Island, Philippine Islands, 19th Century: A Window into the Past This black and white lithograph, titled "View of the Pasig River in Luzon Island, Philippine Islands," is a captivating glimpse into the 19th century. Created by the renowned German naturalist Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz and the French cartographer Godefroy Engelmann, this image is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke, the Seniavin expedition began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was part of a series of Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century. The lithograph showcases the Pasig River in Luzon Island, Philippines, with its bustling scene of boats and local people going about their daily lives. The meeting of the frontier between nature and human settlement is a prominent feature of this image. The indigenous people, dressed in traditional attire, are shown interacting with the river and each other, while the boats in the foreground and background add a sense of activity and movement. The landscape is depicted with meticulous detail, from the winding river to the lush greenery and the mountains in the distance. The image is a testament to the rich cultural and geographical heritage of the Philippines during the 19th century. This lithograph, created by Kittlitz and Engelmann, is a valuable historical document that offers a unique perspective into the daily life and geography of the Philippines during a time of exploration and discovery. It is a reminder of the meeting of frontiers, both natural and cultural, and the enduring legacy of the past.
