The image is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the comprehensive volume of maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke, this expedition began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. The voyage was part of a series of Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century. The lithograph, created by the collaborative efforts of Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz and Godefroy Engelmann, showcases the bustling city of Manila with its vibrant daily life. The image captures the meeting of frontiers, as indigenous people and European influences intermingle.
