EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Victor Hugo, the renowned French author, in 1872. Born in Besancon, Hugo (1802-1885) played a pivotal role in the French Romantic movement. A central figure of his time, he was elected to the Assembly as a Republican during the year of European revolutions in 1848. However, after Napoleon III's coup d'état, he was forced into exile and sought refuge on Guernsey Island until 1870. Hugo's literary contributions are vast and influential. His notable works include "Notre Dame de Paris" (1831), "Les Misérables" (1862), and "Les Travailleurs de la Mer" (The Toilers of the Sea) (1866). One of his plays, "La Rois amuse" (1832), faced banning but later gained popularity when transformed into Verdi's opera Rigoletto. In this portrait, we see Hugo seated at a desk with pen in hand—a symbol of his occupation as an author. His distinguished beard adds to his charismatic presence while reflecting the fashion trends of the nineteenth century. The monochrome aesthetic enhances both his enigmatic aura and the historical significance captured within this image. Preserved within Album de Photographies dans L'Intimité de Personnages Illustres from 1850-1900 by Editions MD Paris, this photograph offers us an intimate glimpse into Victor Hugo's life during a transformative period for France and Europe as a whole.
