EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1857, showcases the Viaduct on the Madras Railway that spans the River Poiney in Arcot, Tamil Nadu, India. The elegant structure was meticulously built by the Madras Railway Company to transport their railway line across the river in the historic region of Arcot. The bridge, a marvel of 19th-century civil engineering, boasts fifty-six granite arches, showcased in this black and white image. The superior quality of the granite used in its construction is evident, adding to its grandeur. At the helm of this engineering feat was George Barclay Bruce, the chief engineer of the Madras Railway Company during the construction of this bridge. Bruce's vision and determination led to the creation of a railway line that stretched an impressive 450 miles from coast to coast, a remarkable achievement given the numerous challenges faced during its planning and execution. This photograph, originally published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the rich history of transportation in India during the British colonial era. The panoramic view of the bridge, with boats and boatsmen navigating the river below, highlights the interplay between the new railway system and traditional water transport methods. This wood engraving is a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of the engineers and builders of the time, and a reminder of the significant role railways played in shaping India's transportation landscape.
