Vegetation around the settlement of Novo-Arkhangelsk (northwest coast of America), 19th century. Creators: Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Louis-Pierre-Alphonse Bichebois

Vegetation around the settlement of Novo-Arkhangelsk (northwest coast of America), 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "Vegetation around the settlement of Novo-Arkhangelsk (northwest coast of America), 19th century," offers a glimpse into the untamed beauty of Alaska's wilderness during the 1800s. Created by Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz and Louis-Pierre-Alphonse Bichebois, this print is one of 65 lithographs that were included in a volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin. The expedition, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke, embarked on its journey from Kronstadt, Russia's main naval base near Saint Petersburg. After navigating Cape Horn to reach the Pacific Ocean, they arrived at Novo-Arkhangelsk on Alaska's northwest coast. This remote frontier settlement served as an important outpost for Russian exploration and scientific surveys in the early 19th century. In this particular scene captured through lithography, we witness a meeting between men from different cultures amidst lush vegetation. A fallen tree serves as their gathering spot while dogs roam nearby. The landscape exudes an air of discovery and adventure as these explorers navigate uncharted territory. The detailed craftsmanship showcased in this lithograph highlights not only the artistic talent but also provides valuable historical documentation. Preserved within the Library of Congress' collection, it stands as a testament to both Russian exploration efforts and Alaska's rich natural heritage. As we observe this piece today, we are transported back to a time when vast landscapes remained largely untouched by human hands—a reminder that nature once reigned supreme over these remote lands. Let us appreciate this snapshot from history that captures both the spirit of exploration and our planet's enduring beauty.
