EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the image of UJJ Leverrier, a renowned French astronomer who played a crucial role in calculating the position of planet Neptune in 1846. The year this photo was taken is 1884, showcasing Leverrier's enduring legacy even after his passing. Leverrier's calculations were groundbreaking and accurate, as they were confirmed shortly afterwards by JG Galle at Berlin. However, it is important to note that British astronomer John Couch Adams had independently made the same prediction as Leverrier but did not publish his findings. This led to some controversy surrounding the discovery of Neptune, eventually resulting in both Leverrier and Adams being credited jointly for their contributions. Beyond his significant scientific achievements, Leverrier also served as the director of the Paris Observatory starting from 1854. This portrait showcases him with a serious yet determined expression on his face, reflecting his dedication to advancing our understanding of celestial bodies. The commemorative medal featured alongside this photograph highlights Leverrier's impact on astronomy and serves as a testament to his contributions during the 19th century. As we admire this print today, we are reminded of Urbain Jean Joseph Leverrier's invaluable role in unraveling mysteries within our solar system and shaping our knowledge of distant planets like Neptune.
