UJJ Leverrier, French astronomer calculating the position of the planet Neptune in 1846 (1881). Urbain Jean Joseph Leverriers (1811-1877) calculations were confirmed shortly afterwards by JG Galle at Berlin. The British astronomer John Couch Adams had independently made the same prediction as Leverrier, but had not published his findings. After some controversy, Adams was given joint credit with Leverrier for the planets discovery. Leverrier became director of the Paris Observatory in 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense concentration of UJJ Leverrier, a renowned French astronomer, as he calculates the position of the planet Neptune in 1846. The year is 1881, and Leverrier's calculations have already been confirmed by JG Galle at Berlin. However, it was not without controversy that Leverrier received credit for this monumental discovery. John Couch Adams, a British astronomer who had independently made the same prediction but had not published his findings, was eventually given joint credit with Leverrier. In this portrait, we see Leverrier seated at his desk in the Paris Observatory where he served as director from 1854 onwards. The room is dimly lit by a desk lamp which casts a soft glow on his face and surroundings. His expression reflects deep thoughtfulness and focus as he meticulously works through complex equations. The image offers us a glimpse into the world of nineteenth-century astronomy - a world filled with meticulous calculations and groundbreaking discoveries about our solar system. It reminds us of the dedication and intellectual prowess required to unravel the mysteries of space. This historical photograph serves as both an homage to Urbain Jean Joseph Leverrier's significant contributions to science and an invitation for us to appreciate how far we have come in understanding our universe since those early days of astronomical exploration.
