Trojans Deceived, 1830

Trojans Deceived, 1830. The raiding party secreting themselves in the great wooden horse. The story of the legendary wars between the Greek confederation and Troy, part of which is the subject of Homers epic poem the Iliad where it is said to have lasted ten years, has some historical basis. Virgil, in his epic poem the Aeneid, writes of the end of the siege of Troy and tells of the huge wooden horse which Ulysses had built. It was left outside the walls of Troy and the Trojans were convinced it was a Greek offering to the gods for their safe voyage back to Greece. Instead, it was full of Greek warriors who, when the horse was dragged into Troy, waited until night, climbed down and opened the gates of the city and let in the Greek army. From The World Displayed by the Rev Royal Robbins. (New York, 1830)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Trojans Deceived, 1830" takes us back to the ancient city of Troy during the legendary Trojan Wars. The image depicts a pivotal moment in this epic tale - the raiding party hiding inside the great wooden horse built by Ulysses. As described in Homer's Iliad and Virgil's Aeneid, this cunning deception played a crucial role in ending the ten-year siege of Troy. Believing it to be a Greek offering for their safe return home, the Trojans welcomed the colossal horse within their walls. Little did they know that it concealed an army of Greek warriors eagerly awaiting nightfall. The artist beautifully captures both tension and anticipation as we see these hidden soldiers biding their time within their equine fortress. The intricate woodcut technique adds depth to each figure, highlighting their determination and resolve. This print not only showcases artistic mastery but also serves as a visual representation of deceit and trickery prevalent throughout mythology. It transports us into an era where legends were born and wars were fought with both might and intellect. With its historical basis rooted in ancient Greece, this artwork invites viewers to delve deeper into literature such as Homer's Iliad or Virgil's Aeneid while appreciating the enduring impact of these timeless tales on art and culture.
