EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the Triumphal Arch at West Lynn, Norfolk, England, in the year 1850. The arch was erected to celebrate the successful completion of a civil engineering project that diverted the course of the River Ouse, enabling valuable land reclamation in the area. The inhabitants of West Lynn, now a part of the larger town of King's Lynn, gathered to mark this momentous occasion. The archway, adorned with banners bearing the inscriptions "We bid you God speed" and "Go on and prosper," stands proudly at the entrance of the village, near the post-office. The procession, which extended a considerable distance, was graced by the presence of Lady Ffolkes and the Mayoress of Lynn, along with numerous other ladies. The scene is reminiscent of the patriotic spirit and celebratory nature of Victorian Britain. Carriages filled with people, dressed in their finest attire, make their way through the archway, while the Union Jack and other flags are proudly displayed. The Triumphal Arch at West Lynn serves as a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the people during the 19th century, as they came together to celebrate the successful completion of a civil engineering project that brought about significant change to their community. This evocative photograph, originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the architectural beauty of the Triumphal Arch and the spirit of unity and progress that it represents.
