Trinity Hospital, Edinburgh, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Trinity Hospital, Edinburgh, 1845. Accomodation for the poor in Scotland. Trinity Hospital is the oldest charitable establishment in the City of Edinburgh, being the remains of one of the many pious bequests so extensively made in Catholic times; and one of the few which escaped the pious but indiscriminating zeal of the Reformers...It is well known that the Scotch have always been inclined to look upon any regular provision for the poor with distrust. They believe it destroys that independence of character to which they lay claim as a nation; and even this institution, calculated and intended chiefly for those whose infirmities have rendered them legitimate objects of benevolent aid, has not escaped censure. The building...stood exactly on the spot chosen by the North British Railway Company for its terminus...the Hospital is now entirely demolished. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Trinity Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland, dating back to 1845. The creator of this remarkable image remains unknown, but its historical significance is undeniable. Trinity Hospital stands as the oldest charitable establishment in the city, a testament to the pious bequests made during Catholic times. In an era when regular provision for the poor was met with skepticism by the Scottish people due to their strong belief in maintaining independence of character, Trinity Hospital emerged as a beacon of hope for those whose infirmities warranted benevolent aid. However, even this institution faced criticism from some quarters. The building itself occupied a significant location chosen by the North British Railway Company for its terminus. Sadly, today only remnants remain of this once noble establishment as it has been entirely demolished over time. This engraving originally featured in "Illustrated London News" in 1845 and offers us a glimpse into Victorian Britain's landscape and architectural heritage. It serves as a poignant reminder of how religion played an integral role in shaping society during that period. Preserved through time by The Print Collector and now available through Heritage Images, this print allows us to appreciate both the beauty and historical importance of Trinity Hospital while reflecting on societal attitudes towards charity and welfare centuries ago.
