Tintern Abbey, c1840. Artists: David Cox the elder, Walter de Clare
Tintern Abbey, c1840. Tintern Abbey was founded by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow, on 9 May 1131. It is situated adjacent to the village of Tintern in Monmouthshire, on the Welsh bank of the River Wye. It was only the second Cistercian foundation in Britain, and the first in Wales. Falling into ruin after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the remains were often painted by visitors from the 18th century onwards. Watercolour held at the Wolverhampton Arts and Museums Service, Wolverhampton. From The Studio Volume 79. [London Offices of the Studio, London, 1903]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Tintern Abbey, captured in the mid-19th century by renowned artists David Cox the elder and Walter de Clare. Situated on the banks of the picturesque River Wye in Monmouthshire, Wales, this historic abbey was founded by Lord Walter de Clare in 1131. As one of only two Cistercian foundations in Britain at that time, it holds immense religious significance. The image reveals a scene of serene beauty as nature intertwines with architectural splendor. The abbey's crumbling ruins stand proudly against a backdrop of rolling hills and lush greenery. Visitors can be seen admiring this awe-inspiring sight, their presence adding a sense of scale to the grandeur before them. Tintern Abbey fell into disrepair following its dissolution during the 16th-century Reformation but remained an enduring source of inspiration for artists throughout history. This particular watercolor painting has been carefully preserved by Wolverhampton Arts and Museums Service, serving as a testament to its timeless allure. As we gaze upon this remarkable print today, we are transported back to a different era—a glimpse into both our cultural heritage and natural wonders. It is through such artistic representations that we can appreciate not only the physical beauty but also the historical significance embedded within these ancient structures.
