EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment in history during the Spanish-American War. The image showcases two ships, the Comal and the Yucatan, docked at Port Tampa, Florida in June 1898. On board these vessels were father and son, Captain Allyn Capron Senior and Captain Allyn Capron Junior respectively. Little did they know that this would be their last meeting. The ships were en route to Cuba with troops when tragedy struck only days later. Captain Allyn Capron Junior became the first United States Army officer to lose his life in the war, earning him a posthumous Silver Star for his bravery. Meanwhile, his father contracted typhoid fever during the campaign and tragically passed away just weeks after his son's death in September 1898. This heart-wrenching story is beautifully captured by photographer Burr McIntosh as part of his coverage of the Spanish-American War for "Leslies Weekly". McIntosh's lens immortalizes this moment of farewell between father and son against a backdrop of bustling harbor activity. As we gaze upon this historic photograph over a century later, it serves as a reminder of sacrifice and valor exhibited by those who fought bravely for their country. The image also pays tribute to both Captains Capron Senior and Junior, forever etching their names into American military history.
