In the thick of the Traffic by the Mansion House, 1910. Creator: Unknown

In the thick of the Traffic by the Mansion House, 1910. A man wearing roller skates, with open top omnibuses behind, in the City of London....certain of the roller-skates are very suitable for city roads, and are used out of doors much more than people imagine. One skater informs me that he often roller-skates from the City to his suburban home when it is late enough for him to do so without meeting many persons. Given a good macadam road, the pastime is easy and pleasant, but he who ventures on a Metropolitan tour must be prepared for all roads, such as the cobble-stones at Piccadilly Circus, for instance. From " The Strand Magazine, an illustrated monthly", Volume XL - July to December 1910. [George Newnes Ltd, London, 1910]

In the thick of the Traffic by the Mansion House, 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a fascinating moment in time when an unknown man fearlessly glides through the bustling streets of City of London on roller skates. This intriguing photo print, taken from "The Strand Magazine" offers a glimpse into an unconventional mode of transportation that was more prevalent than one might imagine during this era. The image showcases open-top omnibuses lined up behind the daring skater, symbolizing a stark contrast between traditional and innovative means of travel. The caption sheds light on how roller skating was not merely confined to indoor rinks but also found its way onto city roads. It reveals that some enthusiasts even used roller skates for their daily commute, with one intrepid individual sharing his experience of skating from the City to his suburban home under cover of night. While roller-skating on well-maintained macadam roads provided ease and pleasure, embarking on a metropolitan tour demanded resilience due to various road conditions like cobblestones at places such as Piccadilly Circus. This snippet from history reminds us that early 20th-century Britain witnessed unique forms of urban mobility beyond conventional vehicles. Through this photograph and its accompanying description, we are transported back in time to witness an unusual spectacle amidst the hustle and bustle of London's traffic-filled streets. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our constant quest for alternative modes of transport - even over a century ago.
