EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning color lithograph captures the enchanting atmosphere of the 1896 Bal Masqué, or Masquerade Ball, held at the Théâtre de l'Opéra, also known as Palais Garnier, in Paris. Designed by renowned architect Charles Garnier and completed in 1875, the Opéra Garnier is a symbol of Parisian elegance and grandeur. The annual Masquerade Ball was a highly anticipated event in the city's social calendar, attracting Parisian high society and aristocrats dressed in their most elaborate and extravagant costumes. In this image by Henri Gray (Boulanger) from 1896, the opulence of the occasion is beautifully depicted. The intricate Art Nouveau design of the poster reflects the ornate decor of the opera house, with its sweeping curves, stylized floral motifs, and rich colors. The dancers in their elaborate masks and costumes are frozen in a moment of joy and celebration, surrounded by a sea of elegantly dressed revellers. The Masquerade Ball was a time for merriment and indulgence, taking place on Shrove Tuesday, the day before the Christian season of Lent began. It was a chance for Parisians to let their hair down and embrace the spirit of Fasching, or Carnival, before the more solemn and restrained period of Lent. This exquisite poster is a testament to the enduring allure of the Masquerade Ball and the enchanting world of Parisian high society in the late 19th century.
