EDITORS COMMENTS
The Late Right Hon. The Earl of Lytton, GCB (George Cross of the Bath), 1831-1891, was a prominent British statesman, diplomat, author, and poet of the late 19th century. This black and white portrait, published in "The Graphic: An Illustrated Weekly Newspaper" in 1891, captures the Earl in his later years. He is depicted wearing the insignia of a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, signifying his high rank in the British nobility. Born as Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton, Lytton served as the British Ambassador to France from 1877 to 1878, and later became the Viceroy of India from 1876 to 1880, during the height of the British Raj. His tenure in India was marked by his efforts to modernize the country's administration and infrastructure, as well as his controversial policies towards the native population. Lytton was also a prolific writer, known for his poetry, novels, and plays. One of his most famous quotes, "It was a dark and stormy night," is the opening line of a novel that was the subject of much ridicule due to its clichéd and melodramatic start. This portrait, with its formal setting and the Earl's distinctive beard, offers a glimpse into the life of a complex and influential figure of the Victorian era. The image serves as a reminder of the British Empire's colonial past and the men who shaped its policies and left their mark on history.
