"The Dead Rabbit" - painted by J. Clark - from the Exhibition of the British Institution, 1857. Creator: Harvey Orrin Smith. "The Dead Rabbit" - painted by J. Clark - from the Exhibition of the British Institution, 1857

"The Dead Rabbit" - painted by J. Clark - from the Exhibition of the British Institution, 1857. The artist has...so successfully rendered the expression of the boys regret for the fate of their favourite that we can scarcely refrain from testifying our sympathy with their simple grief; especially as their disappointment must be so much increased to find that poor "bunny" will no more be able to nibble any of the fresh green fodder they have provided with such solicitude, and so plentifully. There is a touch of humour, though, in the way in which the bigger boy is holding up the rabbit. In order to ascertain if their pet be really quite dead, he holds it up by the ears in the most unceremonious and boylike manner possible...the effect is gained by an amount of stippling which leaves a certain illusive indistinctness, or "muzziness" if you will'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

The Dead Rabbit

EDITORS COMMENTS
painted by J. Clark, exhibited at the British Institution in 1857, is a poignant and evocative work of art that captures the raw emotions of childhood loss. The painting depicts two young boys standing over the lifeless body of their beloved pet rabbit, their faces etched with sadness and regret. The artist, J. Clark, has so skillfully rendered the boys' expressions that we as viewers can almost feel their grief. Their disappointment is palpable as they come to terms with the fact that their cherished companion will no longer be able to nibble on the fresh green fodder they had so carefully provided. The painting is not without a touch of humor, however. The bigger boy, in an attempt to ascertain if their pet is truly gone, holds up the rabbit by the ears in a boyish and unceremonious manner. The effect is gained through an intricate use of stippling, which leaves the image with a certain indistinctness or "muzziness," adding to the dreamlike quality of the scene. The "Illustrated London News" of 1857 described the painting as one that "scarcely refrains from testifying our sympathy with their simple grief." The boys' disappointment at the loss of their beloved pet is a universal experience, and the painting serves as a poignant reminder of the emotional depths that childhood can reach. The Dead Rabbit is a beautiful and poignant work of art that continues to resonate with viewers over a century and a half after its creation. Harvey Orrin Smith, the creator of this masterpiece, has captured the essence of childhood loss in a way that is both heartfelt and timeless. The painting invites us to reflect on our own memories of loss and the emotions that come with it, making it a truly moving and thought-provoking work of art.
