Temporary Crossing Built by Settlers Over the Zolotoi-Kita River. Zimov'evsko-Mesh... 1906-1908. Creator: Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel

Temporary Crossing Built by Settlers Over the Zolotoi-Kita River. Zimov'evsko-Meshchaninovskaia Railroad, 1906-1908. Photographs documenting various stages in the construction of dirt roads in the Tomsk region by workers and engineers of the road-building department of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The albums date from 1906-8 and 1909. The Russian state paid for the construction of roads such as those depicted in the albums in order to connect settlers with a railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers. The overall purpose of the road-building program was to promote the colonization of the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The albums show the construction of roads in the region between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet and Kandat Rivers in Tomsk gubernia (governorate). EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the determination and resilience of settlers as they construct a temporary crossing over the Zolotoi-Kita River during the Zimov'evsko-Meshchaninovskaia Railroad's expansion in 1906-1908. The image was taken by the Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel (Road-Building Department) of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The construction of this temporary crossing was a crucial part of the broader road-building program initiated by the Russian government to connect settlers with the railroad line and facilitate access to essential resources. The photograph is a testament to the arduous process of colonizing the vast taiga regions of Siberia. The settlers in the image are constructing the crossing using wooden planks and ropes, demonstrating their resourcefulness and ingenuity in the face of challenging conditions. The Zolotoi-Kita River, with its swift current and powerful undercurrents, posed a significant obstacle to the settlers' progress. However, their unwavering commitment to the project enabled them to overcome this challenge and continue the expansion of the railroad. The albums documenting the construction of roads in the Tomsk region during this period provide valuable insights into the lives of the settlers and the challenges they faced as they ventured into the unknown territories of Siberia. The photographs serve as a reminder of the courage and perseverance required to build a new life in a land far removed from the comforts and familiarities of home. The Novosibirsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife houses these precious albums, preserving the history of the settlers and their contributions to the development of Siberia.
