The Synod at Thurles - Bishops Robing, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Synod at Thurles [in Ireland] - Bishops Robing, 1850. Clergy in the cathedral....the buildings are large and convenient, and were, upon this occasion, fitted up with much care and costly taste...with seats for the hierarchy, with others at their feet for the attendants'. There was...'a lofty throne for the Primate, facing whom sat the mitred Abbot of Mount Melleray. The flooring and bishops benches were covered with crimson and marone cloth...the hierarchy commenced to change the simple mozetta for the more costly cloak and jewelled mitre: this presented a coup d'oeil of the richest colour and brilliancy. At the conclusion of the mass, these robes were again removed for the more simple ones; when, after having had such portions of the Synod business as was to be thus publicly promulgated, read, they retired to their places on the dais...'.
