EDITORS COMMENTS
Max Klinger's Suffer!, plate fourteen from A Life, created in 1884, is a powerful and poignant depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This black and white aquatint and drypoint etching in black ink on grayish ivory wove paper laid down on cream laid plate paper chine colle, is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau symbolism. The large-scale print, which measures oversized, transports the viewer to the scene of Calvary, where Jesus, crucified and suffering, stands amidst a crowd of three people – a man and two women – who witness the event. The expression of anguish on the faces of the onlookers and the desolate landscape behind them add to the sense of sorrow and despair. The print, which is part of the Heritage Art collection at the Art Institute of Chicago, is a testament to the enduring power of Christian symbolism and the ability of art to evoke deep emotions. The image of the crucified Christ, with his arms outstretched and his body bearing the weight of the world, continues to resonate with people across cultures and centuries, reminding us of the human capacity for suffering and the redemptive power of love and compassion.
