EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'The Stockport Sunday-School, 1850,' showcases a grand educational institution located in Stockport, Cheshire, England. Established in 1806, this Sunday School has been a cornerstone of the community for over four decades. Monthly lectures were delivered on Sunday evenings, with an annual sermon preached by an eminent minister, providing both spiritual guidance and financial support for the institution. The children attended the parish church and other places of worship in the town in rotation, making this a hub for both education and religious growth. The large, imposing building, with its new wing, housed eighty-three teaching rooms. By the last report of the committee, published in 1849, the total number of children being educated in the parent institution and its auxiliary schools reached an impressive 5200. Among them, 2538 were girls, and 2662 were boys. The Bible served as the only class book, reflecting the strong emphasis on religious education. The School for Promoting Christian Knowledge, which oversaw the Stockport Sunday-School, aimed to spread the teachings of Christianity through education. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the bustling and vibrant atmosphere of this Victorian-era institution. The black-and-white image, sourced from The Print Collector, depicts the exterior of the school, with children and adults gathered around the entrance, likely preparing for another day of learning and spiritual growth. This photograph is an invaluable piece of history, capturing the essence of a bygone era and the transformative power of education and religion in shaping the lives of countless individuals.
