EDITORS COMMENTS
On May 16, 1914, in the heart of Washington D.C., the Statue of Commodore John Barry was unveiled in a grand ceremony attended by thousands. The statue, located on the grounds of the Naval History and Heritage Command, is a tribute to the "Father of the American Navy." Commodore Barry, born in Ireland in 1745, served in the Continental Navy during the American Revolution and is credited with leading the first naval victory for the United States. The unveiling ceremony was a significant political event, with dignitaries, military personnel, and citizens in attendance. The event began with a parade of military units, including a cavalry regiment, adding to the grandeur of the occasion. The horses and riders, dressed in their finest uniforms, added an air of tradition and pageantry to the scene. The statue itself is a striking representation of Commodore Barry on horseback, dressed in his naval uniform. The horse, also depicted in the statue, is rearing up, adding to the sense of action and movement. The statue was commissioned by the Commodore John Barry Memorial Association and was created by sculptor George W. Harris and his wife, Martha Ewing Harris. The Harris Ewing photographic studio captured the moment of the unveiling, preserving this important historical event for future generations. The unveiling of the Statue of Commodore John Barry was a proud moment for the United States, honoring the legacy of one of its earliest naval heroes. The statue stands as a reminder of the country's rich military history and the important role that the navy has played in shaping the nation.
