EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century oil painting depicts Saint Rosa of Lima, also known as Isabel Flores y de Oliva, a Peruvian woman who dedicated her life to prayer, penance, and serving the poor. Born in Lima, Peru, in 1586, Isabel lived a simple life and was known for her deep devotion to the Catholic faith. She is depicted here in the habit of a nun, with a crown of thorns on her head instead of the more common crown of roses. This unique depiction highlights her spiritual suffering and her identification with the Passion of Christ. The painting is attributed to the Spanish Baroque artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, although it is unsigned and its authenticity is uncertain. It is a testament to the extensive cult of Saint Rosa in South America, where she is revered as the patron saint of Peru. The cherubs and putti in the painting add an amorini touch, emphasizing the divine love and grace that surrounded Saint Rosa's life. This artwork is a valuable addition to any art collection or gallery, showcasing the rich heritage of Christian art and the cultural significance of religious figures in the Baroque era. The vibrant colors and intricate details of the painting bring the story of Saint Rosa to life, transporting us to a time when faith and devotion were the guiding principles of daily life.
