St. Mary's New Church, Branksea Island, Dorset, 1854. Creator: Unknown
St. Mary's New Church, Branksea Island, Dorset, 1854. The Church is one of the handsomer edifices in the diocese of Sarum. It is built of Purbeck stone, in the Early Decorated style, and has a square embattled tower, surmounted with a small octagonal turret....Colonel and Mrs. Waugh, the founders of the Church, have displayed great taste in their good work, and they must feel highly gratified at the universal approbation of the site, the edifice, and the judgment with which the whole undertaking has been carried out...[It] has been erected at the sole expense of Colonel Waugh, who also gave the site and an endowment of £75 per annum, to which the Government have added £25 on account of the Coast-guard Station'. EDITORS COMMENTS
St. Mary's New Church on Branksea Island, Dorset, 1854, is a stunning example of Early Decorated style architecture in the Diocese of Sarum. The church, built of Purbeck stone, boasts a square embattled tower with a small octagonal turret. Colonel and Mrs. Waugh, the founders of the church, are to be commended for their excellent taste and dedication in bringing this project to life. Their hard work and commitment have been met with universal approval, as the site, edifice, and execution of the undertaking have all been praised. St. Mary's Church was erected entirely at the expense of Colonel Waugh, who also provided the land and an endowment of £75 per annum. The British government added an additional £25 to the endowment due to the presence of a Coast-guard Station on the island. This beautiful and historic church, as depicted in this 1854 engraving from the Illustrated London News, remains a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders and the architectural beauty of the Victorian era.
