Socialists - painted by E. Armitage, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Socialists - painted by E. Armitage, 1850. Winter exhibition. Representation of...a trio of disputants as to the benefits to be derived from Socialism, not the latest by several of the schemes which have of late disturbed society in France, and kept its people up to the boiling point of their vivacity...on the wall hang a military portrait and a few culinary implements - all alike characteristic of French glory - war and cookery. The party is an agreeable one; there is none of the virulence of Socialist controversy in their composition: the hirsute old gentleman and the ouvrier in sabots have, perhaps, just played off a piece of pleasantry with the girl...her expression is between being delighted and posed; her simplicity is truly lovable. The variety of character in the three figures is extraordinarily fine'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Socialists" by Edward Armitage, dates back to 1850 and was showcased during the Winter Exhibition of that year. The image depicts a charming trio engaged in a lively yet amicable discussion about the merits of Socialism, a topic that had caused considerable unrest in France at the time. The setting is indoors, with a military portrait and culinary implements adorning the wall, symbolizing the dual nature of French culture - war and cookery. The figures in the painting exhibit a rich variety of character. The hirsute old gentleman and the worker in sabots (clogs) appear to have just exchanged a light-hearted jest with the young woman. Her expression is a delightful blend of amusement and innocence, making her simplicity truly endearing. The old man, with his bushy beard and traditional attire, contrasts sharply with the worker, dressed in the practical clothing of the working class, and the young woman, who wears a simple, Victorian-era dress. The print, engraved from an original painting by Edward Armitage, offers a glimpse into the social and political climate of the time. It is a testament to the artist's skill in capturing the essence of human interaction and the complexities of social class and political ideologies. The print, now a cherished piece in many art collections, continues to fascinate viewers with its timeless appeal and intriguing subject matter.
