Sketches in British Columbia: scene at the fountain near Parsonville, Fraser River, 1864. Creator: Unknown

Sketches in British Columbia: scene at the fountain near Parsonville, Fraser River, 1864. 'The Fountain, eight miles from Parsonville, which is in quite another district, on the other side of the Fraser River, is well known as one of the prettiest spots on that line of road. Here is a plain about one mile in length, surrounded by romantic mountains, which give it the appearance of a vast amphitheatre. Although the soil here is light and sandy, the owner of the roadside inn manages to grow good crops of grain, vegetables, and - what is more extraordinary in those high latitudes - water-melons, a great boon to the traveller'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning black and white print captures a scene at the fountain near Parsonville, Fraser River in British Columbia from 1864. The image showcases the picturesque landscape of a plain surrounded by romantic mountains, resembling a vast amphitheatre. Despite the light and sandy soil, the owner of the roadside inn managed to grow crops of grain, vegetables, and even watermelons - a rarity in those high latitudes. In this 19th-century engraving from the "Illustrated London News", we see an assortment of animals including horses and donkeys being used as pack animals by cowboys in this frontier settlement. The log cabins in the background add to the rustic charm of this remote location. The detailed sketch provides a glimpse into life during that time period in British Columbia, part of the British Empire. It is a reminder of simpler times when nature was untamed and settlers relied on beasts of burden for transportation and agriculture. This historical print is not just a piece of art but also serves as a window into our past, showcasing how people lived and worked in this rugged yet beautiful region over 150 years ago.
