Sitting of the agricultural commission of the First Duma, St Petersburg, Russia, 1906

Sitting of the agricultural commission of the First Duma, St Petersburg, Russia, 1906. The Duma, the elected legislative assembly of the Russian Empire, was established as a result of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), who opened the Duma, was determined to retain his autocratic power over the government of Russia however. Shortly before the Duma opened, he passed the Fundamental Laws, which stated that the Tsars ministers could not be appointed by and were not responsible to the Duma. Increasing tension between the Dumas members and Nicholass ministers led to the assembly being dissolved within ten weeks of its opening. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in Russian history - the sitting of the agricultural commission of the First Duma in St Petersburg, Russia, in 1906. The Duma, established as a result of the Russian Revolution of 1905, was intended to be an elected legislative assembly for the Russian Empire. However, Tsar Nicholas II had other plans. Despite opening the Duma himself, Nicholas II was determined to maintain his autocratic power over Russia's government. Just before its inauguration, he passed the Fundamental Laws which ensured that his ministers would not be appointed by or held accountable to the Duma. This decision created mounting tension between members of the Duma and Nicholas's ministers. Sadly, this promising assembly met a premature end within ten weeks of its commencement due to these growing conflicts. Nevertheless, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of an important chapter in Russian politics and democracy. Preserved within the collection of St Petersburg's State Museum of Political History, this image transports us back to that historic gathering. It showcases men from various backgrounds coming together inside an ornate interior space; their serious expressions hint at both determination and frustration. As we gaze upon this monochrome snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded that political struggles have always been part and parcel of societal progress throughout history – even when faced with formidable challenges such as autocracy.
