EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the distinguished figure of Sir William Withey Gull, a prominent physician and lecturer at Guys Hospital in the late 19th century. The portrait, taken by renowned photographers Lock & Whitfield, showcases Gull's commanding presence and intellectual prowess. Gull's remarkable career is highlighted in this print. Having joined Guys Hospital in 1856 as a physician and lecturer, he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional clinical skills. His dedication to medicine led him to become a consulting physician even after resigning from his official position due to an increased practice in 1867. The significance of Gull's medical expertise was further acknowledged when he was made a baronet in 1872. This prestigious honor was bestowed upon him for successfully treating Prince of Wales during his severe bout of typhoid fever the previous year. As one examines this portrait closely, it becomes evident that Gull embodies the essence of professionalism and authority associated with physicians of that era. His affiliation with the Royal Society as a Fellow further solidifies his reputation as an esteemed member within scientific circles. Lock & Whitfield skillfully captured not only Sir William Withey Gull's physical appearance but also his aura of intelligence and accomplishment through their lens. This print serves as both a historical record and tribute to one of the most influential figures in medicine during the late 19th century.
