Sir William Herschel, German-born British astronomer. Artist: E Scriven
Sir William Herschel, German-born British astronomer. Holding a diagram of planets and their planetry rings. Herschel (1738-1822) constructed his own telescope after taking up astronomy as a hobby. As well as discovering the planet Uranus in 1781 and two of its satellites, he performed a major study of Saturn. He discovered two satellites, the rotation of the planetary rings and the period of the planets rotation. He also catalogued and investigated the motions of binary stars, the results of which are still in use

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Sir William Herschel, a German-born British astronomer whose contributions to the field are immeasurable. In this portrait, captured by E Scriven, Herschel is depicted holding a diagram of planets and their planetary rings, symbolizing his profound understanding of celestial bodies. Herschel's passion for astronomy led him to construct his own telescope, which ultimately propelled him into groundbreaking discoveries. Notably, in 1781 he astounded the scientific community by identifying Uranus as a new planet and uncovering two of its satellites. His fascination with Saturn also yielded remarkable findings; he not only detected two additional satellites but also unraveled the rotation of its majestic planetary rings and determined the period of its rotation. Beyond these momentous achievements, Herschel meticulously catalogued and studied binary stars' motions—a contribution that continues to shape our knowledge today. This engraving serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication to unraveling the mysteries of our solar system. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of timelessness to this image from the eighteenth century—an era when scientific exploration was flourishing. As we gaze upon this portrayal of Sir William Herschel, we are reminded not only of his immense influence on astronomy but also of humanity's insatiable curiosity about our place in the universe.
