Shoreham, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Shoreham, 1844. The Norfolk Suspension Bridge at Shoreham-by-Sea in Sussex. From this point is a branch line to Shoreham, a passage of ten minutes. After passing through a tunnel, we burst upon the sea-side, with the village of Hove and its little Saxon church; the walls of Aldrington church; and the villages of Portslade, Southwick, and Kingston; till by a continuous embankment, we arrive at Shoreham, near to its fine large Anglo-Norman church. The scene shown in the engraving is the most picturesque view of the town, with the handsome suspension bridge across the Adur, built by Mr. Clark, at the expense of the Duke of Norfolk, in 1833. Shoreham, 1844 - A Glimpse into Sussex's Coastal Charm
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print from 1844 transports us back in time to the quaint town of Shoreham-by-Sea in Sussex. The image showcases the striking Norfolk Suspension Bridge, an architectural marvel built by Mr. Clark at the behest of the Duke of Norfolk in 1833. As we gaze upon this picturesque view, our eyes are drawn to the magnificent Adur River flowing beneath the bridge. The scene captures a moment when smoke rises gracefully from chimneys scattered along the coast, hinting at bustling activity within this charming seaside community. The engraving takes us on a visual journey through various landmarks that define Shoreham's character. We catch sight of Hove village with its humble Saxon church nestled amidst rolling hills. Further along, we glimpse Aldrington church walls standing tall as a testament to history. Our gaze then sweeps across Portslade, Southwick, and Kingston villages before finally reaching Shoreham itself – home to an impressive Anglo-Norman church that adds grandeur to this coastal gem. This historic photograph not only offers a window into Victorian England but also serves as a reminder of how human ingenuity can harmoniously blend with natural beauty. It is indeed fascinating to witness how this suspension bridge connects communities and enhances their lives while preserving the charm and tranquility of Sussex's coastline for generations to come.
