EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning woodblock print, titled "Shinano Sakon Tomoyuki," was created by the renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi between 1848 and 1849. The print is part of Kuniyoshi's series "Heroic Stories of the 'Chronicle of the Great Peace,'" which depicted legendary samurai and warriors from Japanese history. In this image, Shinano Sakon Tomoyuki, also known as Shima Kiyooki or Shima Sakon, is depicted in a powerful and heroic pose. The samurai is shown kneeling with one leg bent and the other extended behind him, while he gestures with both hands. His intense gaze and muscular physique convey a sense of determination and strength. The print is richly colored and intricately detailed, with delicate brushwork and expressive lettering. The background features a scenic mountain landscape, adding to the sense of grandeur and drama. The artist's masterful use of perspective and composition draws the viewer's eye to the central figure. Shinano Sakon Tomoyuki was a legendary samurai from the Tokugawa period (1603-1868) in Japan. He is best known for his role in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, where he fought alongside the victorious Tokugawa Ieyasu. This print celebrates his bravery and heroism, and serves as an important example of the ukiyo-e tradition in Japanese art. This woodblock print is now part of the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and is a testament to the enduring legacy of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and the rich cultural heritage of Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868).
