EDITORS COMMENTS
Shichiri Oboro" is a captivating woodblock print by the renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Kunisada, created in the 1850s during the Edo period. This masterpiece, now housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), showcases four prominent actors of the time: Nakamura Enjaku as Deshi Nitcho, Bando Mitsugoro VI as Deshi Nichizo, Ichikawa Danzo VI as Taijin (disguised as Nichiren Shonin), and Nakamura Fukusuke I as Nanazato-hime. The scene is set in an autumnal landscape, with the actors dressed in elegant and ornate attire, reflecting the affluence and grandeur of the era. Deshi Nitcho and Deshi Nichizo, both boys, are depicted in traditional Japanese clothing, holding hand drums and drumsticks, ready to perform a rhythmic drum dance. Taijin, disguised as the 13th-century Buddhist monk Nichiren Shonin, is shown with a serene expression, holding a letterbox-format scroll and surrounded by falling leaves. Nanazato-hime, a female character, is dressed in a beautiful kimono, adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colors, and holds a fan. The print is a stunning example of the concept of "gepparo," which refers to the juxtaposition of different elements in a single image. Here, we have the serious and spiritual Taijin contrasted with the playful and energetic drummers, creating a dynamic and engaging composition. The use of color and the attention to detail in the clothing and accessories are also noteworthy, showcasing the artistry and craftsmanship of the time. Overall, "Shichiri Oboro" is a beautiful and intriguing work of art that transports us to a different time and place, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Japan during the Edo period.
