The Shellfish Supplies: shellfish-catchers' cottage at Canty Bay, 1862. Creator: Unknown
The Shellfish Supplies: shellfish-catchers' cottage at Canty Bay, [Scotland], 1862. 'Shellfish is the popular name bestowed by unscientific persons on the Crustaceans and Mollusca...The taking of shellfish...affords occupation to the old men and youngsters of the fishing villages, and these folks may be seen in the fine days assiduously waiting on the lobster-traps and crab-cages...Immense quantities of all the edible mollusca are annually collected by women and children in order to supply the large inland cities. Great sacks full of periwinkles, whelks, &c., are sent on by railway to Manchester, Glasgow, London, &c., whilst on portions of the Scottish seacoast the larger kinds are assiduously collected by the fishermen's wives and prepared as bait for the long handlings which are used in capturing the codfish or other Gadidae...On the granite-bound, coast of Scotland the sport of crabhunting may be enjoyed to perfection and the wonders of the deep be studied at the same time...The natives are the best instructors in these arts, and seaside visitors cannot do better than engage the services of some wild fisher youth to act as guide in their perambulations on the beach'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of shellfish gathering at Canty Bay, Scotland in 1862. The quaint shellfish-catchers' cottage stands as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the fishermen and their families who made a living from harvesting these delectable creatures from the sea.
Intriguingly, "shellfish" was a term used by laymen for both Crustaceans and Mollusca back then. The image depicts men, women, and children diligently tending to lobster traps and crab cages on fine days. These humble villagers played a crucial role in supplying inland cities with vast quantities of periwinkles, whelks, and other edible mollusks.
The Scottish coastline provided ample opportunities for crab hunting and deep-sea exploration, with locals serving as knowledgeable guides for seaside visitors eager to learn about marine life. The photo serves as a window into a bygone era when traditional fishing practices sustained communities along the rugged shores of Scotland.
As we gaze upon this historical snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded of the vital connection between humans and nature that has shaped coastal livelihoods for generations. The Shellfish Supplies print is not just an image but a poignant reminder of our enduring relationship with the bountiful seas.
