Settlement of Novo-Arkhangel'sk (Sitka Island), Northwest Coast of America, 19th century. Creators: Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Louis-Pierre-Alphonse Bichebois
Settlement of Novo-Arkhangel'sk (Sitka Island), Northwest Coast of America, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, titled 'Settlement of Novo-Arkhangel'sk (Sitka Island), Northwest Coast of America, 19th century,' is an exquisite piece of art from the annals of exploration history. Created by the collaborative efforts of German naturalist Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz and French artist Louis-Pierre-Alphonse Bichebois, this masterpiece is one of sixty-five lithographs that were published after the monumental round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke, this expedition began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. The image showcases the picturesque settlement of Novo-Arkhangel'sk on Sitka Island, located in the North Pacific Ocean, which was a significant Russian outpost in Alaska during the 19th century. The scene is filled with intriguing details, such as the rugged coastline, the meeting of frontiers between the native Tlingit people and the Russian settlers, and the presence of dogs and other animals. Bichebois' masterful use of black-and-white lithography captures the raw beauty and untamed spirit of the North American frontier. The image is a testament to the spirit of discovery and the rich cultural heritage of the era. This historic artwork, which is now part of the collections at the Library of Congress, is a must-see for anyone interested in the exploration of the New World, the history of Alaska, or the art of the 19th century.
