Searching for Rebel Santhals, 1856. Creator: Unknown

Searching for Rebel Santhals, 1856. In the Sketch representing the searching for Santhal rebels is a very fine elephant, the property of Mr. Charles Barnes, a gentleman well acquainted with the Santhals, their country and manners, and who was with us in all our wanderings and foraging parties. This elephant, besides being of great use as affording an excellent and an elevated position for viewing the country from, was employed by us in forcing open the doors and pushing over the huts of the Santhals wherever the presence of rebels was suspected. This elephant was in various engagements, and was several times wounded by Santhal arrows'. The Santhal rebellion took place in present-day Jharkhand and West Bengal, , and was an uprising by the Santhal people against both the British East India Company and the zamindari system. Searching for Rebel Santhals, 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photographic print depicting British soldiers and their elephant in pursuit of Santhal rebels in present-day Jharkhand and West Bengal during the Santhal Rebellion. The image, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1856, showcases a British gentleman, Mr. Charles Barnes, seated on the howdah of a majestic elephant. The elephant, owned by Mr. Barnes, was a valuable asset during the rebellion, providing an elevated vantage point for surveying the terrain and aiding in the destruction of Santhal huts suspected of harboring rebels. The Santhal Rebellion, an uprising against the British East India Company and the oppressive zamindari system, took place in the late 19th century. The rebellion was a significant challenge to British imperialism and colonial rule in Hindoostan. In this photograph, the British soldiers are seen armed and ready, with a mahout guiding the elephant. The huts in the background are being destroyed, with the elephant trampling over them in its search for the rebels. The Santhal people, an indigenous community, were subjected to oppressive labor practices under the zamindari system. The rebellion was a cry for freedom and a rejection of the British rule. The photograph captures the intensity and determination of the British forces in their quest to quell the rebellion. The elephant, with its powerful presence, symbolizes the might and dominance of the British Empire. The print, with its historical significance, is a testament to the turbulent colonial past and the complexities of the relationship between the British and the indigenous populations.
