The Santa Maria della Salute Church, 19th century. Artist: Victor Adam
The Santa Maria della Salute Church, 19th century. From a series of views of Venice. In 1630 the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from an outbreak of the plague gripping it at the time, a new church would be built and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The result was this Baroque church designed by Baldassare Longhena. Generally referred to as La Salute, it stands on the opposite side of Venices Grand Canal from St Marks Square, at the point where the canal empties into the lagoon. The church was truly Longhenas lifes work, taking 51 years to complete before being inaugurated in 1681, the year before his death. Found in the collection of the State Art Museum, Tula, Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Santa Maria della Salute Church, a true masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Created by artist Victor Adam as part of his series on views of Venice in the 19th century, this image captures the grandeur and beauty of this iconic church. The story behind the creation of Santa Maria della Salute adds to its significance. In 1630, during a devastating plague outbreak in Venice, the Venetian Senate made a solemn promise that if their city was delivered from this tragedy, they would build a new church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. And so it was done - Baldassare Longhena designed this extraordinary structure as an offering of gratitude and devotion. Standing proudly on the opposite side of Venice's Grand Canal from St Mark's Square, La Salute is not only an architectural marvel but also holds deep religious meaning for many. Its dome dominates the skyline and its elegant design draws visitors from all over the world. Victor Adam's painting beautifully captures both the church itself and its surrounding landscape. The glistening waters of Venetian canals are adorned with sailing boats and gondolas, adding to the enchanting atmosphere depicted in this artwork. Displayed at Tula's State Art Museum in Russia, this print serves as a testament to both artistic skill and historical significance. It allows us to appreciate not only Victor Adam's talent but also Baldassare Longhena's lifelong dedication that brought forth such an awe-inspiring place of worship.
