EDITORS COMMENTS
Saint Quiriaco, also known as Saint Cyrus, is depicted in this 15th century woodcut print from the series "Heiligenleben" or "Lives of the Saints" by Jacobus de Voragine. The print, Plate 8 from the portfolio assembled in 1929, was created by the woodcutter Johann Schönsperger the Elder under the supervision of Wilhelm Ludwig Schreiber. Saint Quiriaco, a Christian saint and martyr, is shown here in traditional attire with a pilgrim's staff and a book in his hands. He is surrounded by various figures, including angels and demons, symbolizing his spiritual battle and ultimate triumph over evil. The intricate detail and bold lines of the woodcut illustrate the power and importance of religious art in the medieval period. This print is a rare example of the rich artistic heritage of the 15th century, a time when woodcut prints were widely used to spread religious messages and stories. The use of laid paper and letterpress lettering adds to the authenticity and historical significance of the piece. Originally from Augsburg, Germany, this woodcut print is now part of the permanent collection at the Art Institute of Chicago, where it is displayed as a testament to the enduring influence of Christian art and the artistic achievements of the past.
