This evocative full-length portrait depicts Saint John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ in Christian tradition, as a bearded man with a stern expression and a penetrating gaze. Dressed in the robes of an ascetic, he holds a scroll bearing the inscription "Ecce Agnus Dei," or "Behold the Lamb of God," a reference to Jesus Christ. The painting, created by the Bulgarian School in 1702, is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Bulgaria during the eighteenth century. Saint John the Baptist is shown standing with one hand raised in benediction and the other pointing to himself, symbolizing his role as the one who prepared the way for the coming of the Messiah. The painting is executed in tempera on wood and measures approximately 120 cm x 90 cm. This hauntingly beautiful work of art was once part of the collection of the Petit Palais Museum in Paris, France, and is now considered a prized possession of Bulgarian cultural heritage.
