EDITORS COMMENTS
Saint Anthony of Padua, a beloved saint and renowned preacher of the Catholic Church, is depicted in this exquisite 15th-century painting by Cosimo Tura. The work, titled "Saint Anthony of Padua Reading," dates back to around 1475 and is currently housed in the prestigious Musee du Louvre in Paris. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195, Anthony was originally named Fernando Martins de Bulhoes. He joined the Augustinian Canons Regular but later transferred to the Franciscan Order, becoming a friar in 1220. Known for his deep faith and miraculous abilities, Anthony was canonized in 1232, only two years after his death. In this painting, Saint Anthony is shown in a contemplative pose, engrossed in the reading of a large open Bible. The intricately detailed oil on canvas work showcases the artist's mastery of the Renaissance style, with the use of naturalistic colors and lifelike textures. The saint's flowing robes, the delicate folds of the parchment, and the realistic rendering of the Bible's leather cover all contribute to the painting's visual richness. The presence of the halo surrounding Anthony's head and the rays of light emanating from it underscore his status as a wonderworker and a man of divine grace. The serene expression on his face conveys his deep connection with the sacred text and his unwavering faith. The influence of the School of Ferrara is evident in the painting's composition and the use of chiaroscuro, the contrast between light and dark. The overall effect is a captivating work of art that transports viewers to a time of spiritual fervor and artistic innovation in Italy during the late 15th century.
