Sections were first built by the Killke culture about 1100; they had occupied the area since 900.The complex was expanded and added to by the Inca from the 13th century; they built dry stone walls constructed of huge stones. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Sacsahuaman Fortress, located on the northern outskirts of Cusco, Peru. The image was beautifully captured in 2015 by talented photographer Luis Rosendo. Sacsahuaman, also known as Saksaq Waman in the Quechua language, is a historic citadel that dates back to ancient times. Its origins can be traced to the Killke culture who began constructing sections of this fortress around 1100 AD after occupying the area since 900 AD. However, it was during the Inca period from the 13th century onwards when Sacsahuaman truly flourished. The complexity and grandeur of this site are evident through its massive dry stone walls made entirely out of enormous boulders. These stones were meticulously cut and fitted together without any use of mortar, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and engineering skills. Perched at an altitude of 3,701 meters (12,142 feet), Sacsahuaman offers breathtaking panoramic views over Cusco and its surroundings. It stands as a testament to both Inca ingenuity and their reverence for nature's resources. Luis Rosendo's photograph perfectly captures the magnificence and timelessness of this historical marvel. It serves as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage and invites us to appreciate the architectural wonders left behind by ancient civilizations like the Inca people.
