The Rutt Jatthra, a Hindoo Festival held at Juggernauth, in Orissa, from a native drawing, 1857. Juggernauth, which means "the Lord of the World, " and is one of the thousand names of Vishnu, in the avatar or manifestation of Krishna, is situated on the sea coast of the Cuttack district of Orissa...When the processions are to take place, the cars are brought in front of the temple, those of Siva and Juggernauth being forty feet high...Siva is daubed over with dirty white paint, Juggernauth with dark blue, and Cali Durga with yellow...the priests drag them along by ropes about their necks, while the people utter the most discordant yells, and perform the most ridiculous and indecent gesticulations...It is said...that as many are drawn to Juggernauth by the indecency as by the sanctity'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Rutt Jatthra, or the Car Festival of Juggernauth, is a vibrant and intriguing Hindu festival held in the coastal town of Juggernauth, in the Cuttack district of Orissa, India. This ancient tradition is one of the many manifestations of Vishnu, specifically in the avatar of Krishna, and is believed to draw devotees from all walks of life. The photo print, created from a native drawing in 1857, depicts the excitement and chaos of the festival. The deities of Siva, Juggernauth, and Cali Durga are brought out of the temple, each adorned with distinct colors - Siva with white, Juggernauth with dark blue, and Cali Durga with yellow. The priests, dressed in traditional attire, drag the massive, forty-foot-high effigies along, while the crowd roars with discordant yells and performs eccentric gestures. The deities are transported on elaborate floats, often accompanied by elephants, adding to the grandeur and spectacle of the event. The print, engraved in black and white, captures the raw energy and devotion of the people, who are pulled towards Juggernauth as much by the indecency and excitement as by the sanctity of the festival. This wood engraving, published in the Illustrated London News in 1857, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Orissa and the unique traditions that continue to thrive in India. The Rutt Jatthra remains an essential part of the region's religious calendar, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
