EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting beauty of the ruins of Soli, also known as Pompeiopolis, in Turkey. Taken in 1841 by J H Kernot, this engraving showcases the stormy weather that adds an air of mystery to this ancient city's remains. Soli was a significant city and port located in Cilicia, present-day Turkey. Destroyed in the 1st century BC and later rebuilt by Pompey the Great, it became known as Pompeiopolis. The image transports us back to a time when Asia Minor was a thriving continent with rich religious history. The pillars and columns depicted here stand tall amidst the ruined landscape, serving as reminders of Soli's once glorious past. This monochrome print evokes a sense of melancholy while highlighting the architectural marvels that have stood against time. Published in John Carne's book "Syria, the Holy land and Asia Minor" this engraving offers viewers an opportunity to explore historical sites from centuries ago. It is a testament to both artistic skill and historical preservation. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork by J H Kernot, alongside contributions from William Henry Bartlett and John Carne, we are reminded of our connection to ancient civilizations and their enduring legacies.
