The Royal Scots. The Square at Quatre Bras, 1815, (1939)

The Royal Scots. The Square at Quatre Bras, 1815, (1939). The Royal Scots form a square with bayonets fixed to repulse the French. The Battle of Quatre Bras, 16 June 1815, was a preliminary engagement to the Battle of Waterloo, fought two days before the main battle. The Anglo-Dutch army of the Wellington fought against the left wing of the French Armee du Nord under Marshal Ney at Quatre Bras in Belgium, a strategically important crossroads. The outcome was a draw, but gave the French a strategic advantage in that Wellington was unable to assist Bluchers Prussian Army, who were being defeated by the main body of the French army at the Battle of Ligny. Both Wellington and Blucher were forced to withdraw northwards. From Battles for the Flag, a set of cards given away with British boys comic The Wizard. [D. C. Thomson & Co. Dundee, 1939]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "The Royal Scots. The Square at Quatre Bras, 1815" captures a pivotal moment in history during the Battle of Quatre Bras in 1815. In this image, we witness the formidable Royal Scots forming a square formation with bayonets fixed, ready to repulse the advancing French forces. The Battle of Quatre Bras served as a preliminary engagement before the famous Battle of Waterloo, fought just two days later. Led by Marshal Ney, the left wing of the French Armee du Nord clashed against Wellington's Anglo-Dutch army at this strategically important crossroads in Belgium. Although resulting in a draw, this battle granted the French a strategic advantage as it prevented Wellington from assisting Blucher's Prussian Army who were facing defeat at Ligny. Consequently, both Wellington and Blucher had no choice but to withdraw northwards. This remarkable print is part of "Battles for the Flag" an exclusive set of collectible cards given away with British boys comic The Wizard back in 1939. It showcases Lady Elizabeth Butler's exceptional talent for capturing military strategy and patriotic scenes through her artistry. As we gaze upon this historic image today, we are transported back to that fateful day when brave soldiers stood united in defense of their country. It serves as a reminder not only of their unwavering courage but also highlights the significance and impact that battles like Quatre Bras had on shaping our world today.
