His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, 1858. Creators: James Henry Lynch, Richard James Lane
His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, 1858. Portrait of the future King Edward VII. The very natural desire to know something of the personal appearance of a Prince to whom such interest attaches has been gratified by the portrait which (by the permission of Mr. [John] Mitchell, the publisher) we have engraved. It is taken from a photograph from the life, by Mr. Lake Price last year, and lithographed by Mr. R. J. Lane, A.E.R.A. and Mr. J. H. Lynch. There may be easily traced in the portrait a mixed likeness to his Royal parents; and the countenance, open but thoughtful - the figure, lithe and graceful - make up as well-looking a specimen of an English youth as can well be seen. The Highland costume is well known to be a favourite dress of the youthful part of the Royal family, and assorts well with the accessories of the picture. A little stiffness in the pose, and a gravity of expression not quite in keeping with the time of life of the original, but which are perhaps inseparable from photography, are the only drawbacks in a very admirable picture of a very interesting subject...The Prince...has just been gazetted to a colonelcy in the army'. EDITORS COMMENTS
His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, 1858: A Portrait of the Future King Edward VII This photographic portrait of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, later known as King Edward VII, was taken in 1858, during his youth. The image, published in the Illustrated London News with the kind permission of Mr. John Mitchell, the publisher, offers a glimpse into the personal appearance of the Prince who had garnered significant public interest. The portrait, based on a photograph from life by Mr. Lake Price and skillfully lithographed by Mr. R.J. Lane and Mr. J.H. Lynch, reveals a striking resemblance to his royal parents. The Prince's countenance, open yet thoughtful, and his lithe and graceful figure, make for a well-presented example of an English youth. The Prince's preference for Highland costume adds an authentic touch to the portrait, in keeping with the fashionable attire of the Royal family at the time. Although there is a slight stiffness in the pose and a gravity of expression that seems at odds with the Prince's age, these may be unavoidable characteristics of photography during this era. At the time this portrait was published, the Prince had recently been gazetted to a colonelcy in the army, marking a significant milestone in his military career. The portrait not only showcases the Prince's physical attributes but also offers a glimpse into his role and responsibilities as a member of the British monarchy.
