EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, created by Harris & Ewing in 1911, captures Robert M. La Follette, a prominent American lawyer and politician from Wisconsin, during his tenure as a Representative in the U.S. Congress. Known as "Fighting Bob," La Follette served Wisconsin in various capacities, including as a Representative from 1885 to 1891, Governor from 1901 to 1906, and Senator from 1906 to 1925. La Follette's political career was marked by his strong advocacy for progressive reforms and his opposition to political bosses and monopolies. In this image, he is depicted as a serious and determined figure, dressed in a formal suit and sitting against a plain background. The photograph is part of the Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress, which includes over 20,000 glass negatives produced by the Washington, D.C.-based photographic studio between 1911 and 1933. The studio, founded by George W. Harris and Martha Ewing, was one of the most prominent in the nation's capital during the early 20th century, and its archives provide valuable documentation of American political, social, and cultural history.
