Roadbed Before Planning. Kedrovsk-Alekseevsk Road, 1906-1908. Creator: Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel

Roadbed Before Planning. Kedrovsk-Alekseevsk Road, 1906-1908. Photographs documenting various stages in the construction of dirt roads in the Tomsk region by workers and engineers of the road-building department of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The albums date from 1906-8 and 1909. The Russian state paid for the construction of roads such as those depicted in the albums in order to connect settlers with a railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers. The overall purpose of the road-building program was to promote the colonization of the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The albums show the construction of roads in the region between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet and Kandat Rivers in Tomsk gubernia (governorate). EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the roadbed before planning of the Kedrovsk-Alekseevsk Road in 1906-1908. Taken by the talented workers and engineers of the road-building department of the Russian Resettlement Administration, these photographs document various stages in the construction of dirt roads in the Tomsk region. The purpose behind constructing these roads was to connect settlers with vital transportation links such as a railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers. The Russian state funded this ambitious road-building program to promote colonization in Siberia's taiga regions, which are characterized by moist coniferous forests. Located between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet' and Kandat Rivers in Tomsk gubernia (governorate), these albums showcase not only historical significance but also provide an insight into Russia's frontier heritage. The Novosibirsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife proudly houses these albums, preserving their importance for future generations. In this particular image, we see a stunning landscape enveloped by evergreen trees against a clear sky backdrop. The dark hues add depth to this still image while highlighting nature's beauty within Siberia's vast wilderness. The construction process is evident through visible foundations and scattered plants along what will soon become a thoroughfare connecting communities. As we gaze upon this photograph print from Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel (Road Construction Department), we are transported back to early 20th-century Russia—a time when progress met untouched landscapes. It serves as a reminder of human determination to conquer new frontiers while respecting nature's grandeur.
