Road Surveying Party in the Tomsk Region, 1906-1908. Creator: Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel
Road Surveying Party in the Tomsk Region, 1906-1908. Photographs documenting various stages in the construction of dirt roads in the Tomsk region by workers and engineers of the road-building department of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The albums date from 1906-8 and 1909. The Russian state paid for the construction of roads such as those depicted in the albums in order to connect settlers with a railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers. The overall purpose of the road-building program was to promote the colonization of the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The albums show the construction of roads in the region between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet and Kandat Rivers in Tomsk gubernia (governorate). EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time during the Road Surveying Party in the Tomsk Region of Russia, between 1906 and 1908. The Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel (Road Surveying Party) is documented in these images, showcasing various stages of the construction of dirt roads in the Tomsk region. The Russian Resettlement Administration funded the road-building program to connect settlers with railroad lines, navigable rivers, or commercial-industrial centers, promoting the colonization of Siberia's taiga (moist coniferous forest regions). The scene in this photograph depicts a group of men, likely engineers and workers, gathered around a campsite in the forest. Horses and horseshoes are visible, suggesting that transportation involved both man and animal power. Tents are pitched nearby, indicating a temporary settlement. The men appear focused, engaged in their work, and dressed for the outdoors. The landscape is a mix of forest and open land, with the taiga's eco-region forming the backdrop. The construction of these roads was a significant undertaking, requiring the meeting of frontiers between the wilderness and civilization. The image offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the hard work and determination of those who played a crucial role in expanding Russia's infrastructure during the early 20th century. This photograph is part of the Novosibirsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife's collection and is an essential piece of heritage art, offering insights into the history of road construction in Russia and the challenges faced during the colonization of Siberia.
