The RMS Titanic leaving Southampton, 10 April 1912. Creator: Unknown

The RMS Titanic leaving Southampton, 10 April 1912. Operated by the White Star Line, Titanic was the largest and most luxurious ocean liner of her time, and thought to be unsinkable. During her maiden voyage, bound for New York, she struck an iceberg in thick fog off Newfoundland on 14 April 1912. In the collision five of her watertight compartments were compromised and she sank. Out of the 2228 people on board, only 705 survived. A major cause of the loss of life was the insufficient number of lifeboats she carried. Postcard

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic RMS Titanic as it departs from Southampton on 10 April 1912. Operated by the renowned White Star Line, this magnificent ocean liner was a symbol of opulence and grandeur in its time. Believed to be unsinkable, the Titanic embarked on its maiden voyage bound for New York City. However, tragedy struck when she encountered an iceberg in dense fog off Newfoundland on 14 April 1912. The collision compromised five watertight compartments, leading to her eventual sinking. Out of the 2228 individuals aboard, only 705 survived this devastating event. One of the major contributing factors to such a high loss of life was the insufficient number of lifeboats carried by the ship. This haunting image serves as a poignant reminder of that fateful night and stands as a testament to human vulnerability against nature's forces. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of nostalgia and solemnity to this postcard-like photograph from early twentieth-century Britain. It showcases not just a vessel but also represents an era marked by technological advancements and aspirations for transatlantic travel. Preserved through time by The Print Collector, this historical artifact transports us back to that momentous day when hope set sail but ultimately succumbed to tragedy amidst vast expanses of water.
