EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "The Ritz on the Site of the Hotels of Many Generations" takes us back to the bustling streets of central London in the 1930s. The image captures a moment outside the iconic Ritz Hotel on Piccadilly, where open-topped buses line up, ready to transport passengers through the city's vibrant landscape. Steeped in history, this luxurious hotel was built upon the grounds once occupied by the renowned Old White Horse Cellar coaching inn. Its grandeur and elegance are evident in its neo-classical design, crafted by architects Charles Mewes and Arthur Davis. In May 1906, Swiss hotelier Cesar Ritz proudly opened its doors to guests from around the world. As we gaze at this snapshot frozen in time, we are transported not only to a specific era but also into an atmosphere that exudes sophistication and charm. The monochrome tones add a timeless quality to this architectural marvel against which these classic open-top buses stand as symbols of transportation during that period. This remarkable photograph is part of "Wonderful London". Volume 3 edited by Arthur St John Adcock—a publication that beautifully showcases various aspects of Britain's capital city. Through Donald McLeish's lens, we are granted a glimpse into an enchanting past where tradition meets progress amidst one of London's most celebrated landmarks—the illustrious Ritz Hotel on Piccadilly.
